Overview stats (objects, packages) seem incorrect or aren't updating
Problem
You may notice that overview statistics appear incorrect, packages aren't displaying properly, or data isn't updating as expected in your Quilt platform. Common symptoms include:
- Package counts showing incorrect numbers
- Packages tab not loading or functioning
- Missing package information that won't refresh
- Search results displaying incomplete or outdated data
Cause
These issues typically occur when the Elasticsearch index becomes out of sync with your actual data. This is a common synchronization problem that can happen during periods of high activity or after system changes.
Quick check first
Before proceeding with troubleshooting steps, wait **2-3 minutes** and try refreshing if any of these situations apply:
- You recently added a bucket to Quilt
- You recently upgraded your Quilt stack
- The system is experiencing high search volume
- The system is experiencing high read/write volume
*Note: Elasticsearch often resolves sync issues automatically during these scenarios.*
Re-index your bucket If the quick check doesn't resolve the issue, follow these steps to re-index your bucket:
Prerequisites:
- Administrator access to your Quilt instance
- Bucket contains less than 1 million objects
- Allow a few minutes for the process to complete
Steps:
1. Access bucket settings
- **Option A:** Open bucket overview in Quilt catalog → click gear icon (upper right)
- **Option B:** Navigate to Admin settings → Buckets → select the problematic bucket
2. Locate indexing controls
- Find the "Indexing and notifications" section
3. Start re-indexing
- Click "Re-index and Repair"
4. Optional: S3 notifications repair
- Only check "Repair S3 notifications" if:
- Bucket notifications are not working AND
- You're certain no other subscribers use the S3 Events for this bucket
- If unsure, skip this option
5. Wait for completion
- Bucket packages, stats, and search index will repopulate within a few minutes
Expected results:
- Accurate object and package counts in overview stats
- Packages tab loading and displaying correctly
- Search functionality returning complete, current results
- All package information properly synchronized
Additional troubleshooting
If re-indexing doesn't resolve the issue:
- Your bucket may contain more than 1 million objects (requires different approach)
- Underlying Elasticsearch health issues may exist
- S3 notification configuration problems may be present
When to contact support Contact Quilt support
if:
- Re-indexing doesn't resolve the issue after 10 minutes

- You experience frequent sync issues
- You're uncertain about S3 notification settings
Include this information in your support request:
- Bucket name and approximate object count
- When the issue first appeared
- Screenshots of the problem
- Confirmation that you attempted re-indexing
